Greetings & salutations! Thank you for joining us today and supporting the blog.

MissionMed founder, Salma Awwad, here with you. In this post, I'd like to share some very exciting news with you all. First off, if you haven't already, make sure you go check out the previous "MissionCholera" blog post to get yourself caught up on our missions.

As mentioned in the "MissionCholera" post, my 6th grade students were very moved by the unfortunate circumstances of people in third world countries infected by Cholera and, therefore, decided to use their passion and skills to help provide critical aid and essential necessities for those affected.

Quite recently, a devastating earthquake hit Afghanistan, leaving hundreds of thousands of children in extreme danger. The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1 and killed over 1,000 people, while injuring 1,500. This was the biggest and deadliest earthquake to hit Afghanistan in 2 decades. The villages, roads, phone towers, and homes have all been destroyed as a result of this powerful earthquake. This leaves about seven to eight hundred families sleeping in the open, homeless and sheltered by mere plastic sheets. Many children have been left starving without clean drinking water or food, putting them at a severe risk of catching Cholera. Children are the most at danger during natural disasters because they have a higher chance of going hungry, dying from injuries, and getting infected. They also run a higher risk of being abused when they are abandoned or otherwise separated from loved ones.

At MissionMed, our goal is to support and provide a voice for those who need our help. Our students felt passionate about providing clean food and water for those effected by Cholera, so they worked hard and raised a grand $500 profited at recess, which has just been donated to the children of Afghanistan in need of resources like clean food and water to stay alive. The incredible organization UNICEF has been making a huge impact on many lives in a plethora of third world countries all over the world, which is something we stand for and respect greatly. We would like to help UNICEF continue to make a difference and provide for the earthquake victims of Afghanistan.

In 2018, UNICEF succeeded at vaccinating over 270,000 people in Yemen during the Cholera epidemic. UNICEF is doing a phenomenal job at preventing outbreaks like such, by vaccinating the susceptible and treating the infected.

"UNICEF medical and nutrition teams are working to provide first aid for those who are injured.

UNICEF is also providing critical aid, including kitchen equipment, hygiene supplies including soap, detergent, towels, sanitary pads and water buckets, warm clothes, shoes and blankets, as well as tents and tarpaulins."

"We stand in solidarity with the children and families affected during this difficult time," said Ayoya.
